Thakkali Poondu Thooku is a easy south indian side dish for idli dosai made with ripe tomatoes and garlic. A few weeks ago, I hauled home five pounds of juicy red tomatoes for five bucks. Adyar grand sweets is one of the favorite spots which we never miss during our visit to India. We usually buy a lot of sweets, savories and pickles/thokkus, pack them for our return trip. This malli thokku is similar to the ones which we get there, a great side for almost anything. One down side though- 2 bunches for coriander will yield only about a 200 grams of thokku which is about 3/4 of a regular pickle bottle. This thokku has longer shelf life, if kept at room temperature will last for about 2 weeks and for about 1 month when refrigerated.
Onion Preserve / Pickle / relish / Chutney is a semi thick spicy jelly like coarse paste usually an accompaniment for south Indian tiffin items. In our family we make this thokku in big batches and store for upto 6 months. Great for picnics, instant side for any tiffin like idli dosa or puri. We even spread this on a plain bread toast and quick snack. Fresh ingredients, more oil and using dry spoon every time.. will make this preserve last for long time. Only disadvantage it takes about 1 1/2 hours approximate to make this thokku, which is worth a try for its uses.
This Andhra style thokku is hot in taste and yummy. Usually in tamilnadu we prepare thokku with onion. This method is only with tomatoes.
