Sweet Pidi kozhukattai is one of my favorite snack which is usually prepared during Vinayagar chathurthi. It makes a great evening snack too, my MIL makes this often and this summer during our vacation to India we had quite a lot. She makes many varieties and sometimes include sesame seeds in her sweet version. This variety is very easy to make compared to other kozhukattai recipes and can be made in a jiffy with few ingredients. I wish all my readers a very Happy Ganesh Chaturthi!

|Rice flour (Kozhukattai Maavu or Idiyappam Flour)||1/2 cup|
|Jaggery (Mandai Vellam)||1/2 cup|
|Grated Coconut||1/4 cup|
|Salt||a small pinch|
|Cardamom||2 count (finely crushed)|
|Split Yellow Moong dal||1 Tablespoon|
Dry roast split yellow moong dal in a kadai till becomes golden color. Use low flame while raosting.
Roasted dal should look like this.
Cook this raosted dal in some water for 5 minutes over medium flame. The dal should be firm but slightly soft once its cooked. Strain the water and keep the cooked dal aside.
Now start melting the powdered jaggery in the given measure of water (1 cup). Make sure you melt this over low flame.
Once completely dissolved filter the impurities.
Pour the jaggery water back in the kadai and start boiling. Once it starts to boil add salt, grated coconut, cooked moond dal, crushed cardamom.
Slowly add the rice flour and stir. It may form lumps but will settle once you mix.
Within few minutes till will roll up to thick soft dough. Switch off at this stage.
Let the dough cool a bit and while its still warm, grease your hands with ghee and shape them into dumplings as shown. Roll them into cylindrical shape and press them with your fingers.
Arrange the dumplings in a idli steamer/ rice cooker steamer / bamboo steamer. Cover and steam for 10 minutes over medium flame.
Once cooked the kozhukattias will look shinny as shown.
Yield: 10 Kozhukattais
Do not boil jaggery syrup for long time this will make your kozhukattai hard.
You may also include toasted black sesame seeds.
You may also substitute ghee with sesame oil.
Skip salt if using store bought idiyappam flour (which includes salt). Home made rice flour (padham padhutha arisi maavu) will also work.
Store bought Kozhukattai flour does not include salt (pls check the package and then proceed)
