Bakya, you can use Basmati rice too. Actually my recent sona masoori bag wasn't good so i used to make pongal in Basmati rice. Aroma was also good while using basmati.
But for authentic taste sona masoori is good. Try kavi's method too.

Hi bakya, sure u can try with long grain rice.....try in this method, u'll get nice pongal....after frying rice & dhal, soak in water for 10 minutes.
