Breast Feeding Moms!

Dear Breast feeding moms,

It is important to follow certain dietary restrictions while breastfeeding so that the baby will not suffer from colic, gastritis, discomfort, sleep problems, crying all night etc.It basically depends on the food mom eats. Each baby reacts differently to the food but based on my practical experience I am giving the following suggestions: Following are the foods to avoid:

  1. Eggs – Baby’s digestive system is developing and does not have the capability to digest the proteins in eggs. When ever I eat eggs my baby used to have colic problems. You can eat egg whites in moderation may be one per day but do not eat egg yolks.
  2. Cows Milk and dairy products- Take milk and/or cheesy products in moderation may be one cup a day. Enzymes in milk are too hard for the baby to digest. When ever I drank more milk, my baby used to avoid my breast milk. Sounds weird! But this is true.
  3. Oily foods – Consuming too much oily foods like vadas, deep fried stuff while breast feeding also makes the baby to avoid drinking mom’s breast milk.
  4. Sesame seeds – Once I ate ellu kathirikkai since I love this so much and my baby was crying all day. The heat that sesame generates is intolerable for the baby.
  5. Watch your diet. A diet that consists of quick-fix food and loads of caffeine isn't good for mother or baby.

Foods to eat for breast milk secretion and to relieve colic problems are:

  1. Garlic – make garlic chutney, garlic podi, rasam etc
  2. Fenugreek powder, fenugreek seeds – soak in water and drink
  3. Anise
  4. Fennel seeds
  5. Drinks lot of fluids and keep hydrated
  6. Brown Rice – contains B vitamins, selenium, iron, fiber and manganese.
  7.  Avocados – contains potassium, vitamin B6, and Pantothenic acid
  8.  Beets – high in potassium
  9.  Carrots – high in vitamin C
  10.   Barley – high in phosphorus, magnesium, and vitamin B6.

You may have lot of suggestions please share your thoughts too so that it will be beneficial to all moms. Stress can negatively affect milk production, so be stress free and happy. We are all blessed as moms to have the wonderful opportunity to breast feed so let us follow the above to benefit the baby and the mother.

hi friends, Keeping you

hi friends,

Keeping you hydrated is one point and eating a lot of fresh veggies and fruits help.
Spinach, Fish, Whole wheat bread, Oats helps in good secretion of milk. Drink lots of milk.
Mothers should eat garlic, ginger, Omam(carom seeds-i think). Betal leaves are also good.

Tips while feeding:
1. do not feed the child on the same side, once left side and next should be right and not on the same side.
2. Release the milk if it hardens this is not good for babies
3. Do not feed the child with your hair wet
4. clean yourself before nursing
5. Hold close to the nipple like scissors to hold the milk that comes fast, to streamline the flow.
6.if the milk gets in the nose and she/he coughs and chokes, stop nursingfor a while,
gently blow air on the head of the baby, raise the arms of the baby up and down, and continue to nurse after a while.
7. Always put the baby in her crib or bed after she/he burps.

i shall post some more as and when i remember....I have 2 children and i nursed both for 1 1/2 years each.

All, I am a new Member to

All,

I am a new Member to this website. I try most of your recipes. Enjoy it a lot. I have a 4 year and 8 months old. Just stopped breast feeding him.

Try pumping milk every 3 hours or feed, especially during first 3 months. It really helps milk supply. Also, increase your (P) fruits intake- pears, prunes(this works miracle, espically if you have constipation during breastfeeding, which i suffered a lot).

I am a working mother, i pumped lot of milk and stored in a deep freezer which is good for 6-1 years depending on freezer type. I bought the one from SAMS (180 $- i think) worked out amazing.

Good luck

Sowmya

instead of having red

instead of having red chillies u can take pepper...pepper s very good when breast feeding....

Its better to have a glass

Its better to have a glass of water before Breastfeeding its helps a lot to be hydrated...Eating fish(even dry fish)increases milk secretion

Do not take too much

Do not take too much caffeine during breastfeeding. Though nobody is advising to avoid it altogether, make sure to limit it to a moderate amount only. Apart from coffee, some sodas, teas and over-the-counter medicines also contain caffeine. So, decide on the intake accordingly.

It is recommended not to have more, vegetables like cabbage, onion, leeks, broccoli, cauliflower and cucumber while feeding the baby.

If you baby starts avoiding breast milk, it is better to check whether you had some strong flavored food in the recent past and avoid the same.
