Best Chapati flour / Atta??

Posted by Mullai

Dear Members,

Which do you think is the best atta from the following??

1. Pillsbury

2. Swad

3. Sujatha (discontinued in some places)

4. Nirav

5. Maya

6. Nature's Best

7. Golden Temple

8. Lakshmi

9. Any local brand from Supermarkets

Indian Stores over here usually have a big 20lbs bag and it would be wise to get an idea about each brand before we grab one for us. Members pls share your experience.... Sujatha was my brand till last month, but then it was discontinued in most stores here in Michigan. Does any brand match the quality???? Golden temple has loads of Maida which makes the rotis turn hard and rubbery after a while, good for parathas though. Suggestions and tips appreciated.

aashirwad is the best,

aashirwad is the best, tried pillsbury(not bad) and annapurna(it sucks).

Hi All, I am using

Hi All,

I am using Aashirwad Atta, and you can find it in any India grocery in USA. Back home everyone at my end uses the same. The chapattis are so soft. You can even take them for your lunch and they are still the same after a quick microwave touch.

We are getting Pillsbury

We are getting Pillsbury Chakki Fresh Atta in NJ. Chapathi's/Pulkhas are excellent. Earlier i used Aashirwaad, now i changed the brand. Both are same quality...

Have a great day

Plese, please let me know

Plese, please let me know where can I purchase Pillsbury Chakki Fresh Atta ? I am residing in Virginia. Please post the web or store address or phone number. I really appreciate it. Thanks.

I have used most of the

I have used most of the brands that you have mentioned in the post and of all i like Swad and Pillsbury Chakki Fresh Atta.

I completely agree with one

I completely agree with one of the review of Laxmi atta that its get bad very fast. It happened to us three times that after 2-3 weeks there are worms in it...yuck. Never buy Laxmi Atta. Also I dont understand why these Indian brands do not have Best Before date. I have seen that date only on Sujata but to us this atta gives us more maida feel. I will try Annapurna and Aahsirwaad.

hi all, after coming to

hi all, after coming to UK, i have tried all sorts of branded attas(elephant, eastern, natco), either they are rich in gluten or contains added maida. annapurna atta( contains NO added maida) is my personal choice, coz it yields soft chapathis in any kind of water. the key to soft dough, is to adding and mixing the flour gradually(by tablespoons) to the water. by piling the hot chapathis, the hot steam further helps retain the softness. i found this method to be useful, for making soft chapathis without any oil.

Poorna.

Is there any supermarkets

Is there any supermarkets [like Fairway, Wholefoods, etc] that carry Aashirwad atta/
I live in Manhattan NY...sure I can go to Queens to pick some up...but It's not eaactly too convenient for me.

I tried Laxmi atta but it

I tried Laxmi atta but it makes rotis little dry.Golden temple atta roti is more like maida.I like Sujata atta. It's roti's are more like India. But I would like to try other also like ashirwad and pillsbury.

Hey guys!!! Would like to

Hey guys!!!
Would like to inform you all that the LAXMI brand atta was full of insects(worms in it). This has happened twice....please be careful if you get one!!!

hi, After reading the

hi,
After reading the comments in this forum I bought Aashirwad atta & I would say Aashirwad is the best.
I have tried Golden Temple (can be rated the worst), Lakshmi brand & Pillsbury (OK if rotis are eaten immediately).
I would settle on Aashirwad as long as it is available in stores
Thanks for posting such a useful topic.
Priya

I used Sujatha, Golden

I used Sujatha, Golden Temple, Lakshmi brand and Ashirwad. The best of these brands for me is Ashirwad. I haven't tried Pillusbury ever. But I like Ashirwad most. I am from Punjab where we use to grow wheat in our farms and get it grind from Chakki. Here in USA, I have started buying grains from Whole Foods Market "http://www.wholefoodsmarket.com/" and grind them at home. BI

Hi Aman I read your comment

Hi Aman
I read your comment that you grind whole wheat grains from Whole foods market at home.
I would like to know how you grind then and using what to grind them. Indian Mixi or any other blender?
The blender will get hot and the shelf life of such atta would be less.
So pls let me know how you go about doing this

Hi, I enjoyed reading

Hi, I enjoyed reading everyone's views on atta. I have started to use Mumtaz Atta. I used to knead the atta with hot water; and I came across a comment saying, warm water makes chappatis rubbery. Can anyone please confirm if warm water really makes the chappatis rubbery. Thanks in advance.

I too am having difficulty

I too am having difficulty in finding a good atta - Canada - Mississauga/Oakville
Recently a storeowner highly recommended the Sher Atta - after making parathas with them I was very dissapointed - atta came out too sticky after kneading and while making parathas was sticking everywhere!

Any good brands to recommend to Canadians? for parathas and phulke's

hi friends, i have been

hi friends,

i have been using Ashirwad atta ...its good.
the only other brand which i have used is golden temple...tht was my worse experience.
i would recommend Ashirwad atta.[:-)]

hi. u should try swad

hi. u should try swad chakki fresh atta its too good. it was first recommended by my doc. and mow i recommend it to u all. its chappati is soooo soft. i like it and eat this only...

Hey All, This is how I

Hey All,
This is how I would rate in decreasing order the brands of atta:
1. Aashirwad / Annapurna /Pillsbury
2. Nature Best / Nature Fresh
3. Swad ( the "Made in India" product)
4. Sujata
5. Any other "Made in India " product should be good but they are all banned :(

Any comments about Nirav or Swarna? In my experience, Lakshmi & Golden Temple suck !

I had been using Nature Fresh & Nature Best when Annapurna, Aashirwad & Pillsbury disappeared from the market, & they were both excellent. But now, even they are not available. I then switched to Swad ( the "Made in India" product & not the one from Canada) which was again quite neat. But now even that is gone All "Made In India" atta products have been banned. All these above mentioned brands were/have been good for even making rotis without oil.
My closest bet was to use Sujata, but after having used the above brands I did not like it. It definitely has maida in it though the percentage is lesser than other available brands & I do not have an option. Its color (whitish) & its elasticity ( like that of maida) speaks for its maida content. But since I make my dough with half milk & half water, this brand has been quite bearable.

I heard that other brands like Swarna & Nirav were good too. I am kinda confused now I need your help with the decision of which brand to buy my new stock of atta - should I continue buying Sujata or should I try Nirav or Swarna? Has anyone tried Swarna / Nirav? I wanted softer rotis with minimal or no maida. Help pls !

Cheers

I like Swarna the most.

I like Swarna the most.

How to judge atta quality-I

How to judge atta quality-I think most here seem to judge atta by fluffiness of chapati. I don't know if that's a good way to judge atta. Here is how we judge atta quality - i.e. no preservatives, no maida and good grain quality-

1. Keep doughed atta in refrigerator. Atta with with most bleaching, chemical preservatives will be first to have a black sheath on top

2. There is thise bhuna (roasted atta) thing that's given in North Indian temple along with prasad and banana. Anyway just roast the atta and after it turns pinkish/brownish taste it. The maida/chemical atta will be bitter. Good quality atta will be bland.

Only Swad passed my test. Now I don't remember if it was bhalia or what but I had bought a Punjab and Maharashtra edition. Both were good.

Now since Swad is not available I take Nature's Best. While Nature's Best was also not available I used to take Sujatha. Sujatha atta is quite bitter after roasting. Nature's Best is sort of bitter after roasting. Still we take both.

I wonder if there is a way I can buy wheat grains from somewhere in US and then find chakki somewhere as well.

Vikram

I think it is available in Madras Groceries...

I use Aashirwaad atta and

I use Aashirwaad atta and would say by far thats the best I have ever used. Golden Temple is the worst of all. My husband had got it when I was not in town and I had a tough time finishing that bag. I used to literally throw the chapathis like frizbees on to my hubby's plate. One tip I would like to give to our friends here is when you are making the chapathi dough please add some COOKING OIL they help them stay soft for a long time after we make rotis.

My husband is from

My husband is from Maharashtra, and over the years I have learned to make chapatis. I was diligently trying many brands to get them perfect. Finally I found Nature's Best, Sujata(Pilsbury), and Swad Bhalia Atta (not chapati atta). I was buying chapatis made for some time due to work schedule, but am making them again. I bought my typical Nature's Best and Sujata, but they changed the mix....yellow or hard now. So, when I went to Chicago I bought 5 bags of Swad Bhalia Atta.....was still perfect. Now I cannot find it. I too wish there was some sort of regulation on atta. If it says whole wheat it should be whole wheat, no yellow color. I think they mix maida and/or corn flour to save money.

I would look for Swad Bhalia specifically. Be carefule because Swad has about three types of atta, and Bhalia is the best one.
Good Luck all. I am also glad to not be the only one having this trouble with atta. Some of the women in my community where I live look at me like I am crazy when I say that.

Sujatha/Pillsbury is the

Sujatha/Pillsbury is the best.

I have not seen a better atta than Sujatha which is nothing but Pillsbury. Its perfect for phulkas, they always fluff up so well.
I have seen my friend using Golden temple, I totally agree that it sucks. Its more maida than atta. Worst I have ever seen!

I have tried a lot of atta

I have tried a lot of atta brands in the US. Swad(Bahaliya) is the best. Even my husband makes perfect rotis with Swad. Real fluffy ones.

pillsbury chakki atta is

pillsbury chakki atta is the very perfect flour to make chapathi because of its taste and easy to make dough and comes up fluffy a, so soft chapathis and there is no need to add oil . very rich and tasty . I advise everybody to use this brand.

Hello, Is there anything we

Hello,

Is there anything we can do as a consumer to eliminate these flour mixing activities by these guys. To me it's clearly a fraud if they are selling mix flour with bag labeled as 100% wheat flour. I am sick and tired of changing brands because every now and than they tend to mix stuff. I have filed a complaint in a local county's health administration about these products but not very hopeful of receiving positive response from them.

Golden Temple is the worst

Golden Temple is the worst atta we ever used. It should be sold as MAIDA not as atta.
If you are looking for wheat atta, do not buy Golden Temple atta.

Any idea if "SWAD Bhalia

Any idea if "SWAD Bhalia Whole wheat flour" is available in any of the stores in Dallas area. This is the best atta I have ever seen in USA.

Hi all, I was using

Hi all, I was using annapurna atta, it was so good. Chapathi's will be very soft and come like a puri. We started having chapathi everyday instead of rice. Its very very good.

This is time i thought of giving a try for Swad Chapathi Flour, it is not good. The flour is pale yellow in color. Even if u have hot also chapathi seems to be hard. I found on the pack that it is made of Durum Atta Flour and Wheat Barn. Is that the normal atta or something different?

Can anyone help me out in making soft chapathi's with this swad chapathi flour, because i bought the whole 20lb pack :-( ???????

Sujatha is Pillsbury.

Sujatha is Pillsbury. They're both from General Mills and marketed under different packagings. So Sujatha comes out real fine too. But Ashirwad's also good.

Anyone use "Nature Best"

Anyone use "Nature Best" Atta? It seems a bit coarser than most, but does mostly work, although seems to require more effort to get it to act right.

Hi Guys, Today i tried

Hi Guys, Today i tried chapathi using "Nirmal" atta. Wonderful i couldn't imagine that even i could prepare so fluffy chapathis. I have tried Annapurna and Sujatha. Was thinking Sujatha was best but after today, my vote is for "Nirmal". I purchased this from Kavita Store, Los Angeles. Thanks to my husband who got the advice from the Store owner.

hi mullai, even i am using

hi mullai,
even i am using aashirvaad and a big fan of it.thank god and i am getting it here.
in india we use hot water and one fourth teaspoon of dalda and make soft but the consistency should belittle bit soft than the dough we make for puri.
and roll it in small circle like puris and heat non stick tawa cook lightly on both sides and keep on the gas flame.i am sure chappathis will puff like puris..no oil.

Thanks for all ur responses frenz.. i guess i will go with the pillsbury atta for chapathis.. Can anyone plz suggest what brand of atta to use for nice Puris and soft Phulkas... my phulkas always become lil rubbery when i store them for later..

If you use hot/warm water

If you use hot/warm water to mix the flour, then the pulkas turns out to be rubbery after sometime. That's the mistake i was doing. I use pilsbury with cold water and every time it turns out perfect.

I read all your responses

The Brand ShreeBhog is the

The Brand ShreeBhog is the best atta. This is produced in a Hi-tech Plant with traditional chakkis.Wheat aroma is superb with a higher absorption of water. The dough never turns black as a most efficient cleaning of wheat is done.In cleaning process even the upper layer of wheat is cleaned to get it free from all dust & pesticides.Use it once and you will become a Fan of it.

I buy Gold medal stone

I buy Gold medal stone ground whole wheat flour from any US grocery ..It has brans visible in it . and chappathis will not be as soft as we get usually out of other flours.
